Milpitas Urgent Care: Treating Psychological Effects of Sports Injury

Jason Heyward, outfielder for the Atlanta Braves broke his jaw when he was hit by a pitch last August, 2013. The injury was shocking in its suddenness and a painful reminder that wherever aggressive physical activity is involved, dangers are inherent. NBC Sports provides more details on the untoward incident:

“Heyward was hit in the jaw by a Jon Niese fastball in the sixth inning of a game against the Mets on August 21. He had been on a hot streak ever since manager Fredi Gonzalez moved him into the leadoff spot on July 27. He logged 12 multi-hit games out of 21 starts, including six consecutively from August 11-17. He had bumped his OPS up to .771 at the time of his injury.”

Thankfully, NBC Sports also reports that Heyward has started practicing again prior to the Braves’ September 13, 2013 game against the Padres. David O’Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution notes that “there is no timetable for Heyward’s return, but the Braves hope he will be able to log some at-bats before the regular season runs out so he can be ready to contribute in the playoffs.”

When a player gets injured, not only is his physique affected, but his entire being as well. Coping with the stress of an injury requires physical and emotional resilience. It’s a given that sports injury treatment provided by Milpitas urgent care physical therapists focuses mainly on physical rehabilitation, but psychological issues are also addressed to help the patient recover mentally and emotionally. Here are some strategies doctors advise to help you cope with a sports injury better:

Maintain a positive attitude

To speed up recovery, you need to be committed to treatment, so show up for your treatment schedules, listen to and follow your doctor’s instructions, and work hard. You also need to pay close attention to what you’re thinking and telling yourself during the rehab process. Think positive and remain focused on what you need to do to get well.

Find support

Injured folks often isolate themselves from the people closest to them, and this can lead to the buildup of negative feelings. It is important to maintain contact with coaches, teammates, and friends as you recover from your injury. Simply knowing that you don’t have to face your injury alone can be of great help.
